if an otter contemplates the reflection of the moon on the water, is it pondering the nature of existence, or merely deciding if the moon would make a good snack?

Animals (including otters) have an understanding of being and of the existence of nature around them, but this understanding is fundamentally different from that of a human being. Therefore, we cannot begin to understand what the otter perceives and how.

Just as I don't know whether the red that you perceive in your retina looks exactly like my red. We have both only learned to say "red" to this colour value
